#Shatter2016: Young Women in Business Conference

Thursday, March 31, 2016
This past weekend, Young Women in Business held their first conference in Toronto called Shatter: Breaking the Glass Ceiling. I was very fortunate to be invited by the YWIB Team! It was also the first time I was able to meet my Canadian babe, Jenn from A Spoonful of Sugar!

We weren't able to stay long but within the time we spent there, we heard incredible and empowering women and their stories. They specifically talked about the lack of women in entrepreneurship. The keynote speaker was Ashlyn Birdy from BioSensive Technologies Inc. Her company is introducing stylish wearable technology. She explained how a lot of people out there would not normally wear a fitbit to the workplace because it doesn't match their outfit (totally can relate to that). The technology they use is small enough to embed into jewelry like earrings. I thought that was unique in itself because even though wearable tech is increasing in the fashion industry, there's not so many of them that you would normally wear on a day-to-day basis. I think the only other wearable tech that I would actually consider wearing is Bauble Bar's collaboration with Up Move. If you want to get more details on Ashlyn's company, check it out here.

There were a lot of inspiring things that were said at the conference that I'd like to share (most of them from Ashlyn because I really enjoyed her speech!

I'm finally at a place where I'm more comfortable telling my story

  • I'm not going to go into Ashlyn's story because it's not mine to tell. I can say that she has been through so much and despite all the struggles in her life, she was able to overcome all of it and it's truly empowering to see all that she's accomplished. It was amazing to see how she truly embraces every part of her and how she doesn't let her struggles define her.
  • Never adjust your goals, adjust your effort

  • I love this, mainly because whenever I set a goal and I come short of achieving it or something gets in the way, I always adjust my goals when instead I should take it as a sign to put in more effort./li>

There doesn't have to be obstacles, there's only obstacles if you let them get in the way

  • Ashlyn said so many amazing things during her keynote but this was one of my favourites. It's 100% true - obstacles only stay there if you let it.
  • Don't be afraid of failure, embrace it

  • Time and time again, you might hear people quoting Edison's "I have not failed, I've just found 10000 ways that don't work". When it comes from someone who has failed and has gone through struggles, it means so much more.
  • Hope you enjoyed this post and got some inspiration from the Young Women in Business Conference like I know myself and Jenn did!
