TREND ALERT: Patchwork

Monday, October 19, 2015
Ever since I bought my patchwork skirt from Zara (worn in this post) earlier in the summer during their sale, I've noticed how many stores have been starting to come out with patchwork apparel like shirts and skirts; specifically denim and suede items. I personally love patchwork and have gathered some of my favourites. Click the picture to redirect you to the item on the original website! Fashion Meets Technology

Thursday, October 15, 2015
I look forward to the Met Gala every year. I love to see how the attendees incorporate the theme of the gala into their outfit selection. Although, at times, I feel like the attendees want to outshine one another versus to use this opportunity (of having a theme) to learn more about how different fields of work is incorporated into the fashion industry/how different cultures interpret fashion. To be completely frank, it's hard to motivate myself to learn about something new unless I'm able to apply it in a field I'm already interested in. For example, I never would've chose to take a Chinese Paintings course in school (this semester) if it weren't for the Met Gala 2015 theme, "Through the Looking Glass" exhibit. I went to see that exhibit earlier in the summer and it definitely opened my mind into learning more about other cultures in the art world instead of focusing on European/Western art (which is what I have mainly learned as my time as an art history major).

With the 2016 Met Gala theme being announced, I was ecstatic to learn that theme was Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology. I've been fascinated with all the applications computer programming is capable of for a couple of years now. My boyfriend is studying computer science so when I finally decided to take a course in it (in 2013), he was pretty happy that I ended up enjoying it. Recently I have been fascinated with how technology can be used in the fashion industry. Normally, you wouldn't think computer programming and fashion can intersect but when you learn to apply computer programming to fashion pieces, it really becomes unique and intriguing designs. When I first saw this, it was at a 3D printing exhibit in Toronto. I've heard about 3D printing in the past but this was the first time I was genuinely interested in the content. In one of the sections of this exhibit, it had a timeline of 3D printing. In 2010, designer, Iris Van Herpen unveiled the first 3D printed fashions. Van Herpen is a Dutch fashion designer who collaborated with a U.K. architect, Daniel Widrig and a Belgian company, .MGX by Materialise to create 3D apparel. I thought it was SO interesting. The designs were incredibly unique and it was nothing like I've seen before. Below are examples of 3D printing in Van Herpen's past collection.

The second time I was interested in the fashion x technology intersection was during NYFW SS16. Zac Posen showed a dress that was in collaboration with Google's Made with Code; this dress was able to light up. The model, Coco Rocha looked stunning in the dress and it made me want to further my knowledge when it comes to computer programming. The applications it is capable of is endless so I'm really excited to see what designers come up with for the 2016 Met Gala since there are infinitely many possibilities.

Personally, I have a few thoughts in mind about what I would like to see on the red carpet, including:

  • Designs by Iris Van Herpen: She is the main reason I was fascinated by technology in fashion and she is constantly raising the bar and designing unique items that is not typically designed like you would normally think of when it comes to fashion.
  • LED dresses:A simple design concept by using an Arduino board but it definitely would stand out during the night - especially when it's complete darkness of course!
  • 3D Printing Dresses/Accessories: I'm not quite sure how comfortable 3D printing apparel can be (considering the 3D printed objects I've seen doesn't seem like the most comfortable thing in the world), it would be interesting to see celebrities having other 3D printed objects like accessories (for instance, clutches) or jewelry.
  • Hopefully you found this article to be informative and maybe you found some inspiration from it! I hope you're able to look at computer programming/technology is a new perspective. Also, if you're interested in learning more about computer programming, definitely check out! It's basically Khan Academy but specifically for learning different programming languages. (Tip: if you want to learn one of the easier programming languages, start off with Python!)

Leave a comment below telling me what kind of designs you're hoping to see on the red carpet at the 2016 Met Gala!

To end this, here's a quote I found (in this article) said by Iris Van Herpen, “The first time I used 3D printing, it completely changed my thinking. It freed me from all physical limitations. Suddenly, every complex structure was possible and I could create more detail than I ever could by hand”

    Style Muse: Kiernan Shipka

    Monday, October 12, 2015
To be completely honest, I had no idea who Kiernan Shipka was. Recently, she's been constantly showing up on my Twitter timeline and in the cutest outfits. From TIFF to fashion week, whoever is styling this girl (whether it be herself or a stylist) is doing a great job at it. There's a few red carpet looks I've seen of her that has totally been making her my most recent style muse. If you don't know, Kiernan is a 15 year old actress who is most known for "Mad Men". The first two style muse posts I did only had 3 looks but I've been so inspired by Kiernan's looks that I had to do a couple of more. (I totally would do more as well!) I mean, look at how cute she is! I found some items to recreate her looks. I hope you love her looks as much as I do. I totally grabbed so much fashion inspiration from her outfits so don't be surprised if you see me wearing some of these inspired looks as well. Let me know in the comments below what your favourite look of hers was or who your style muse is :)

    Outfit 1:
  • I remember in high school, I used to wear triangle scarves all the time! It definitely was one of my favourite kinds of scarves until I started wearing infinity scarves. I grew out of it and never really thought of wearing it like I used to (unless it was a huge blanket scarf like the LV one Chiara wore that I showed in this post). Once I saw how Kiernan's outfit was put together, it totally inspired me to possibly start wearing them again. I love how the details of the scarf match her bag; it puts the entire look together and I love how it's such a subtle detail but makes such a difference.

  • Outfit 2:
  • You can never go wrong with a thin sweatshirt and floral skirt. I love how floral is usually associated with spring and summer fashion but adding fall pieces like the ankle booties and a darker sweatshirt makes it more of a floral fall time kind of look. The bow necklace is an added touch that makes the look super adorable!

  • Outfit 3:
  • This is probably one of my top favourite outfits of her. I love the patterned skirt and how her purse again matches the details of it.

  • Outfit 4:
  • When I first saw this outfit, it immediately reminded me of a playsuit I wanted from New Look. Unfortunately, it was from last year so sometimes ASOS comes back in stock with it but it's pretty rare; if you are able to snag this piece, the sale price is AMAZING. I linked an alternative to the playsuit as well since it's not guaranteed that the playsuit will go back in stock.

  • Outfit 5:
  • This outfit is perfection. Pure perfection. I love this ensemble so much. I'm pretty sure there's some leather detailing on the skirt which I'm totally for. Although I love leather apparel, leather skirts aren't something I would want to wear all the time. I love a leather trimming much more than a pure leather top or bottom.

    #OOTW: September 2015

    Monday, October 5, 2015
Finally back to school! I definitely started one of the latest weeks compared to everyone I know. It's almost a new month and I only started school September 14. I originally wanted to show you my first week of school outfits but it ended up being really hectic (getting forms and running around campus to finish errands) so I thought I'd show you the third week. University is a really different atmosphere. It's not until a few weeks into school that you're "settled in". You still have the opportunity to change your schedule around so I've had semesters where I was on a completely different schedule than what I originally signed up for. Now that I finished the third week of school, I'm finally settled in my official schedule I had planned. With a lot of things going on with school, my outfit can change from really put together to casual and comfy depending on the kind of day I have. Without further or due, here's my week of outfits!

  • RIPLEYS! I was so stoked when I saw that Ripley's Aquarium was offering a half off admission promotion for students the past weekend. I went a couple of years ago soon after it opened and it was amazing but since it did first open, it was insanely crowded so it was nice to have it a bit more empty. The last time I went, it was also really cold so it was annoying to have to deal with how crowded it was and on top of that, have a bunch of layers on; it definitely ruined how interactive the aquarium was because you were allowed to touch animals like stingrays. Having to constantly take on and off your jacket was a hassle so it was nice not to deal with that.

  • Monday:

  • I've been under the weather the past week so today was all about keeping it casual with a long sleeve striped shirt with some standard dark wash jeggings. I threw on my sleeveless blazer to make the look more put together and to make it seem like I tried harder than I actually did.

  • Tuesday:

  • Today was the second week of my position as a part-time intern/volunteer for the Royal Ontario Museum. There's an option in my art history program where you can take an internship course instead of a normal lectured kind of class. The week prior, I dressed business casual so I could get a sense of what the workwear was like. Considering this is a part-time position and I also have class afterwards, I wanted to make sure the way I dress was appropriate for the internship and class. I already wore this sweater a few days ago (as you can see on my Instagram feed) but I love it so much, I couldn't resist wearing it again. I fell in love with everything about it when I first saw it and eventually purchased it a couple of weeks later (when I had a coupon). The mustard colour is perfect for fall and definitely reminds me of some of the outfits in Tory Burch's collection during NYFW SS16. It was a very cloudy and rainy day on Tuesday so instead of wearing the exact same outfit I wore last time, I decided to wear the sweater with dark jeggings and Timberland boots. I decided to dress a bit more casual instead of business formal/casual because of the long day I had ahead. On top of class and the internship, I had to stop by Yorkville to pick something up. My day was pretty much packed with a lot of walking in the rain! Since I was running around the city quite a bit, I didn't have time to take a full OOTD photo so I decided to show a picture from when I wore the sweater previously.

  • Wednesday:

  • Interning part-time, working part-time and full time school is definitely crazy so even though this was the third week of school, it's a miracle when I put together a great outfit. This day I had a meeting at my part-time internship, then I had a couple of classes for the rest of the day. I've been meaning to start wearing my over the knee boots so I thought it'd look perfect with this outfit. I recently received this embellished detachable collar from ASOS that I've been really excited for. I could never find an embellished one like this in stores so when I stumbled on this on ASOS, I knew I had to buy it eventually. Since I did have class and it was another gloomy day in Toronto, I wore the embellished collar on top of a magenta peplum blouse I got a while ago at Forever21. Due to certain circumstances, I was unable to get a photo of my outfit (and also couldn't take it again with something I was genuinely happy with) so I made this with the exact pieces of my outfit.

  • Thursday:

  • Today was a very long half day. I had work in the morning (and had to deal with unforeseen circumstances), had class and then ran an errand. After that was all over, I commuted home which ended up taking an extra half an hour that totally tired me out. Since it was 5 degrees in the morning this day, I ended up going very simple with my outfit and wearing a turtleneck sweater, jeans and over the knee boots. The rest of my day went to studying for a quiz I had the next day.

  • Friday:

  • TGIF! Finally made it through the week. This week felt like the longest week of school I've had. Today, I only had one class (but had a quiz as well) and work. After that, I walked around Yorkville to check out the new store "cos". I pretty much roamed around the city until the Behind the Nuit event that was in the evening. The dress code for the event was casual and since I don't really own any casual pieces, I ended up borrowing a top from my sister and wore it with the same ol' kind of Hollister jeans and over the knee boots I wore for most of the week! It was so cool being part of the Inside Out project (by artist, JR). Although, it was very intimidating knowing that I only get one photo and only 6 seconds to figure it out. I defaulted to smiling but it turned out good so I'm happy! I also was allowed to paste it onto the ground at Nathan Phillips Square so my face was there for people see during Nuit Blanche.

  • Saturday:

  • This day I really didn't do much. Besides get lunch, I mainly stayed at home so I stayed in a campus sweatshirt which isn't interesting enough to post a photo of! I had so much work to do, it was more of a stay at home day.
  • Style Muse: Chiara Ferragni

    Thursday, October 1, 2015
Chiara Ferragni (also known as The Blonde Salad) has always been a fashion inspiration to me. I always look forward to seeing her looks at fashion week and her "Chiara Ferragni Collection" (PS: these flats from her collection are seriously amazing and I wish I could own them). I picked out 3 looks that I adore and thought were perfect fall outfits as well. Hopefully you feel inspired by these outfits and channel your inner Chiara!
